Step 1
First steps after installing: channel name, resolution, logo, and basic settings so Playout is ready before you start scheduling.
Step 2
How to connect Playout with vMix so the engine plays what you scheduled. Ideal if your channel already uses vMix.
Step 3
Register your disk folders in Playout (shows, music, separators…) and assign each one an editorial category.
Step 4
Design on-screen graphics: logo, now/next, clock, weather, and more, with the visual GC Editor.
Step 5
Choose which graphics appear depending on the type of content on air (for example: logo on movies, none on ads).
Step 6
Build the day's schedule: create blocks, set fixed times, and add videos or folders so everything airs at the right time.
Step 7
Keep building the week: more blocks, order, separators, and continuity between time slots.
Step 8
How to change what is already scheduled (or on air) without breaking the broadcast: save and sync correctly.
Step 9
Save time: copy a full day (or template) to Tuesday, Wednesday, etc., and adjust only what is different.
Step 10
Set up video ad breaks and GC banners for clients: times, materials, and on-screen appearance.
Step 11
Prepare your material better: trims (Mark In/Out) and clear names so the schedule and GC read well.
Step 12
How to close a day or broadcast properly: stop on air, backup habits, and leave the system ready for the next day.
Explained in plain language. Read in order the first time; then use the index or search.
Imagine your TV channel is a train that must leave every day at the exact time. Playout is the schedule and the automatic driver: you build the programming (what airs at 8, at 2, at 9 PM…) and the app sends those videos and graphics to vMix or OBS, which actually push the signal on air or to streaming.
Playout does not replace vMix/OBS: it works with them. You choose one of the two engines.
Tip: also check the Requirements page. Playout and the engine run at the same time, so the PC needs headroom.
PlayoutStudio_Setup_….exe.C:\PlayoutStudioTV).When you open it for the first time, the activation window appears:
Golden rule: 1 license = 1 computer. If you change PCs, use Unbind computer (in the app or in My account) with Annual/Full/Premium. Demo is not transferable.
On the left rail you will see important buttons:
Mental order: configure → media → schedule → test → go on air.
vMix: open vMix → Settings → Web Controller (API) enabled (typical port 8088) → in Playout: Test connection.
OBS: OBS 28+ → Tools → WebSocket server settings (typical port 4455) → same password in Playout → Test connection.
PGM monitor (header): you can see a lightweight preview with virtual camera (same PC) or NDI. There you also set preview FPS. Turning off the monitor frees CPU; the broadcast does not stop.
In CONFIGURE → Initial setup:
Playout does not upload videos to the Internet: it points to folders on your disk.
Organize folders in Windows first. In Demo there is a file limit per folder.
In CONFIGURE → Categories, for each content type, mark which GC layers should appear on air (LOGO, NOW AND NEXT, CLOCK, WEATHER, PROMO…).
Easy example: in Shows you want logo + now/next; in Separators maybe only logo or nothing. You decide here.
Backups: in the Scheduler use BACKUPS → Full channel ZIP from time to time (schedule, GC, clients…; it does not copy terabytes of video).
If you edit while on air: SAVE + Sync schedule in the main window.
If you sell ad slots to clients:
Set days, times, and materials. Always save.
On the rail, open TEST:
Quick checklist:
Then click START BROADCAST. To stop: STOP BROADCAST.
Same PC (reinstall): make a ZIP backup → reinstall → activate → restore ZIP. Videos must stay in the same folders.
Another PC (Annual/Full/Premium):
There is an anti-abuse limit (few changes per year and waiting days). Demo cannot be unbound.
| Situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| Asks for license / won\'t open | ID/KEY, Internet, license not used on another PC |
| Cannot connect vMix/OBS | Program open, API/WebSocket, host/port/password |
| Videos not showing | Folder registered, files inside, category |
| Schedule ≠ on air | SAVE in Scheduler + Sync |
| GC not appearing | Scene saved + category with that layer enabled |
| Choppy preview | Normal at 8 fps; raise monitor FPS or use NDI |
| Empty after reinstall | Restore full ZIP backup |
